The filter is still effective without rinsing but it will reduce the filter s lifespan.
Make a water filter out of charcoal and sand.
A diffuser plate which acts like a strainer should be set an inch or two above the top layer of sand allowing room for the water to sit after you pour it into the bucket.
This is the bottle that will become your charcoal and sand filter.
You should have enough crushed charcoal to fill your cylinder up about halfway.
If you don t rinse first you will definitely need to run a few gallons of water through the filter before even attempting to use the water for something potable.
To use the filter pour water into the bottle and let it drip through the hole in the cap.
It is a good idea to place a couple of inches of packed down grass or sand or another piece of cloth on top of the charcoal to prevent it from becoming displaced when you add your water.
This will be the final barrier before the water comes out clean.
Rinse the gravel sand and charcoal to remove unwanted dirt and silt from the materials before they are packed in the container.
Fill the bottom third of the bottle with activated charcoal the middle third with sand and the top third with gravel.
If the water runs rather than drips through the filter you will need to pack your charcoal tighter.
Take your cotton ball and push it tightly against the cap.
